Purrseidon was born to a feral cat in our neighborhood… we were smitten, but wanted to wait until the babies were 6 weeks old before we ‘claimed’ her. In the meantime, we focused on taming her mother and both kittens (another neighbor claimed Purrseidon’s reddish sister and names her Lucy Fur.)
All seemed fine, except for the wait,
then Lucy Fur drowned in a puddle. Next, we saw a dog shaking Purrseidon, like a toy … the owner said they were just playing. (Not the way we allow our dog to play with a tiny creature!) We went into a panic and catnapped Purrseidon two weeks early.

When she got old enough to climb (other than jeans and slacks) and got the kitchen cupboards, we tried to train Ms. Purr to stay off the counters with a squirt gun. She liked getting squirted, and we suspect she’d get on the counters just so we’d get her wet. Then, she learned to turn on the lever sinks and <ehem> play in the potty. Any running water was like a summons for Purrseidon, and no matter where she was, she would rush to it: flush the toilet, she would rush in; fill the tub and splash, you’d have company; forget taking a shower alone. Fortunately, she hasn’t figured out how to get into the dish washer, coffee pot, clothes washer (it has a locking lid, but purrhaps it is only a matter of time before she figures this out) Bottom line, if you want Purrseidon, forget calling, “Here Kitty, Kitty.” Just turn on the faucet and she’ll be there in a flick of her tail

We began to wonder if we’d somehow jinxed our kitten when we purrified the name Poseidon or if we’d subconsciously known she had an obsession with water.
As spring came, we noticed that she would sit in the window and meow whenever it rained, so we taught her how to walk on a leash
– our county has a leash law for both cats and dogs. She learned quickly, so soon, she was walking Ms. Munchkin two blocks to the school bus. Eventually, we decided to get really daring and took her to The Jungle Trail.

She loved riding in the car and adored chasing crabs on the trail, as well as climbing a few trees…. then, she caught a whiff of the Atlantic, and suddenly, instead of walking along companionably, she was tearing off over a small dune. We figured she simply wanted to see what that smell was.
She wanted to play in the waves. She wanted to go boogie boarding. She wanted to swim….
When the weather and our schedules permit, we try to humor her, even though our elderly tom gets very upset every time she comes home happy as a clam, but soggy and smelling of the sea.
Her kitten antics were included Kaj Graham’s humorous little book Kittens Are A**holes – Kaj loves kittens and cats, but is also realistic about the situations they create. Purrseidon’s influence has infiltrated my own Sea Purrtector Files in the form of Mischief, who first appeared in Purr-a-noia (I was writing the rough draft of that book about the time she moved in. Mischief is also in The Vi-Purrs, and will be in Me-YEOW!, which is currently being edited.)

Another chance to remind people to spay and neuter their pets. Except for Jeanne, Purrseidon would have been “played” to death by that dog, and her poor sister drowned.
Negligent people who let their pets wander around getting pregnant (or impregnating) make me steaming mad! Purrseidon, at least, got saved from the dog – never a good idea to let a dog do what that dog was doing with Purrseidon. Poor kitty, she must have been terrified!
OK! OK! I got that out of my system, for now! That said, Jeanne, I enjoyed learning more about the kitten Purrseidon, having followed her as an adult in this blog. She is more special than I realized, and she IS a pretty special kitty!

Mr. Doug, I’m glad you enjoyed hearing about my early days. While that neighbor dog was an awful beast, it didn’t take long for me to learn that Saphera is a wonderful doggy mom, so I learned early that not all dogs are bad.
BTW, Mr. M was born feral, too and in many ways, he had a much more difficult life, since he needed to take care of himself for years….
And while I’m on this topic, my staff found Saphera running next to the interstate when she was about 6 months old ( she’s 8 or 9, now)… she had a broken tail and PTSD, but our staff thought she was wonderful…. they also shake their heads because she still runs and hides from strangers, but begs to go outside to watch fireworks.
Have a meowser of a day, dear furiend! >^.^<

We grabbed Purrseidon from the jaws of death (literally), so she didn’t have the choice, that our other pets did, but I don’t think she minds.

That she is and apparently her littermate was, too…. Unfortunately, Lucy Fur got into deep water before she learned to swim.

We were wondering if Purrseidon would be interested in being interviewed for Cat Forum’s January edition? We would send the questions and she would send the answers and pictures. Thank you. Snoops and Kommando

I’m sure she would be flattered.

Purrseidon would love it here with us then, living on a boat and all.
I’m hooked and following!

Hello Purrseidon! My name is Artemis and I am a Greek cat. I like water too, and I can swim! I live on a boat and love going for rides in the dinghy!

We don’t have a dinghy, but my human staff used to have one when they lived on a catamaran. Artemis, it must be wonderful to live in such a beautiful place and be able to jump into the sea whenever you want!

To be honest, I’ve only gone swimming when absolutely necessary, for example when I’ve fallen in twice… Once I jumped onto another boat from ours and landed on their fender which was too slippy, so, Splash! And once when I tried to leap ashore when we were mooting stern to, and I misjudged the distance… Oops!

In the Bahamas, we met Sharkey, a pretty little black and white cat, who lived aboard Carpe Diem … her humans each had their own dingy and Sharkey loved to bounce back and forth between them – until the day she didn’t look before she jumped over the rail, when one dingy was gone and landed in the water….

Glad to meet you Purrseidon. Our humans thought alike on using purr in our names, and greek gods! I’m not as keen on water as you are, but my furiend Shadow is…you two should really meet if you haven’t already. Paw Paw for now! =^,,^=

I am very glad to know there are other cats who love water. Mr. M acts like there is something wrong with me.
