Dear Furiends,
Saphera is falling apart…. literally. But don’t worry – she does this about twice a year and since I’ve taken on gardening duties, I’ve also learned that hair and fur are good mulch, thus I’m combining today’s selfie with mulch collection… the rest of you have snow, I have fur drifts.
I can’t tell you which is better/worse because I’ve never encountered snow.
If you think I’m joking, look at these larger photos! And they are only part of the shed.
Purrseidon >^.^<
PS: I’ve been hawking up so many furballs that I figure I need to find a better way to perform this bi-annual project. Does anyone have suggestions?
PSS: Do not suggest a haircut. Her top coat is UV protected, so it keeps her from getting sunburned…. Thankfully she is almost done shedding.

MWAHAHHAHAH… snow in Florida 😛
And all that white fluffy flocky flakes on the green meadows of the State of Sun 😆

Sid, dear furiend, this happens twice a year, the the worst shed is in the Spring…. Some theorize that Saphera is 90% fur. >^.^<

MOL
99,9% I would dare to say! Her diet was only to keep her fluffiness calm and comfy 😛

Actually, until the Spring Shed, we didn’t realize how overweight she was… her fur hides a lot! >^.^<

Looks like you have a ton of great ideas in the comments about what to do with all that cat fur. Now, I’ll eagerly await the blog post followups! Will it be bird nests? Sweaters made of hair? I can’t wait to find out!

Saphera sheds twice a year…. and I bet that she sheds my weight in fur each time (10#). >^.^<

We have never seen that much fur, even after Mom Furminates Giulietta and gets enough fur to make another while cat. Amazing. We’d think everyone would have hairballs to hork up. Thanks for hopping. That batch of fur was from that day… she’s been shedding for over a week… you wouldn’t know it to look at her, either. I suspect Saphera is 90% fur. >^.^<

Most of our cats love the Furminator. The one who doesn’t, Horizon, doesn’t like anything.

In that case, if we get one, M and I can benefit from it too!!! >^.^<

And she has been shedding for a week… that is only what came off this time!!! If I don’t keep up my collections, my yard would look like it was covered in ‘snow’… we are definitely looking at those FURminators … what would be ideal would be a unit that fit on a shop vac (we have a regular one, but if the head fit on a shop vac, it would stand a better chance of holding the fur. Plus, we can put a trashbag in the shop vac, and that makes things very simple… >^.^<

I bet birds would love to line their nests with that fur. Great selfie.

That is so true! If only Saphera would shed at a time of year when birds were building, I could get a lot of help with this situation! >^.^<

Definitely recommend a Furminator, I have one and they do shift an incredible amount of surplus fur. Like any comb device, and this especially as it is metal, you don’t go at it hell for leather. And have a bin handy for the shed coat, I’m sort hair and I lost a fair bit and it stopped me over grooming too.

Hi Sister, you have fursnow, much better than ordinary snow. My dad brushes me every morning, and he collects fur in a small plastic bag and in spring he will put it out to trees, so birds can use it softening their nests.

That would make a wonderful bird nest! Our staff puts the lint from the dryer out for the birds and I suspect that if any birds are building, they will grab some of Saphera’s fur…. have you ever seen so much fur! You’d think she didn’t have anything left, but I can barely see the difference. >^.^<

Do you know some people knit sweaters from dog fur. I don’t know how they make yarn of it, but Saphera is able to give yarn for many, many sweaters.

I suspect that if I could learn how to make yarn and knit, I could make lots of sweaters! Must look into this. Thanks for the idea. >^.^<

Wow, that is a LOT of fur – like on Boodie level! I second the FURminator – they have them for both cats and dogs. I don’t need it because my fur is single-coated and fine, but it’s great for those with heavy coats.

I need to research this FURminator thing… currently, we put the hose on the shop-vac, so it blows like a giant hair dryer , which is why the mess is scattered over such a big area….Have a wonderful day, my furiend! >^.^<

Hmmm … I think you might enjoy snow, Purrseidon. I mean, it’s just frozen WATER. Kind of cold though … but I imagine you’d find a way to make it fun. Poor Saphera … is there anything left?!?! Hairballs are no fun. Last year, Bear Cat had a really rough spring and summer with them. I brushed him every day and it didn’t seem to help. I just got a Furminator with the hopes it might pull up more fur this year. It really picks up A LOT of fur. The reviews are mixed … some people claims their cats love it … others insist it hurts them … but after last year, I’m desperate. And Bear doesn’t seem to mind … though I don’t use it on his belly or legs. So pretty as always, Purrseidon!

I shall definitely look into this FURminator thing… Saphera sheds like this twice a year, and yes, she is still wearing the majority of her fur, so she is a huge source of mulch – and mess, not to mention the cause of my current hairball problems. >^.^<
